Indonesia Ranks Third-Largest Tilapia Exporter Worldwide
Indonesia has now secured its position as the third-largest tilapia exporter in the world, after China and Colombia. According to data from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Indonesia’s tilapia exports from January to August 2024 reached USD 36.6 million, with a total volume of 10,340 tons.
Most of these exports are shipped to the United States, followed by several countries across Asia and Europe.
Quality and Size Drive Global Market Demand
Budi Sulistyo, Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products (PDSPKP) at KKP, stated that demand for Indonesian tilapia continues to rise thanks to its high quality and ideal size, particularly the export-preferred harvest size of around 1 kilogram per fish.
He added that North Sumatra has become one of Indonesia’s main tilapia production hubs, supported by strong infrastructure and the sustainable ecosystem of its freshwater lakes.
Regal Springs Indonesia: Pioneer of Premium and Sustainable Tilapia
A key player behind Indonesia’s growing reputation in the global tilapia market is Regal Springs Indonesia. Established in 1988, Regal Springs is recognized as a pioneer in premium tilapia farming with a fully integrated and sustainable aquaculture system.
Through responsible farming practices, Regal Springs ensures full traceability from hatch to harvest, applies a zero-waste policy, and safeguards lake ecosystems—particularly Lake Toba in North Sumatra, one of its main farming locations.
Tilapia: A Low-Carbon Protein Source for the Future
As global awareness increases around safe, nutritious, and environmentally responsible food, Indonesia’s tilapia stands out as a low-carbon protein source. Tilapia raised in Lake Toba is known for its low environmental footprint, high protein content, and serves as a sustainable alternative to traditional animal proteins such as beef or chicken.
Regal Springs Upholds International Quality Standards
Regal Springs further strengthens Indonesia’s global image through its commitment to quality, food safety, and social responsibility.
By collaborating with local communities and adopting international certifications such as HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) and BAP (Best Aquaculture Practices), Regal Springs ensures that Indonesian tilapia meets the standards required to compete in the world’s premium markets.
A Bright Future for Indonesian Tilapia in the Global Market
With strong government support, sustainable aquaculture practices, and growing international demand, the future of Indonesia’s tilapia industry looks increasingly promising.
From the pristine waters of Lake Toba to dining tables across America and Europe, Indonesian tilapia now stands as a symbol of quality, sustainability, and national pride.
