Lessons from the Lake: Reflections in a Changing World

By Rudolf Hoeffelman – President Director, Regal Springs Indonesia

Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned about leadership didn’t come from boardrooms, they came from the lake.

Every time I visit our farming site in Lake Toba, I’m reminded that our work isn’t just about growing fish or ensuring product quality. It’s about protecting the environment, building trust with the local community, and making sure that what we do today will matter in the long run.

And whenever I need inspiration, new ideas, or simply renewed energy, the volcanic Lake Toba gives me many of the answers. There’s something about being close to the water that brings clarity and perspective.run.

Here are a few things the lake has taught me:

Nature Doesn’t Rush

We live in a fast-moving world. There’s constant pressure to decide quickly and keep pushing forward. But the lake reminds me that nature works at its own pace, calmly, steadily, and with purpose.

If we want to build something sustainable, we need to follow that rhythm: slow down when needed, stay responsible, and think beyond short-term results. That’s also how I try to lead our business. Growth is important, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of the environment or the people around us.

Change is Part of Life

Aquaculture keeps changing. There are plenty of challenges  from climate shifts and rising costs to evolving consumer expectations. But I’ve learned not to fear change. In fact, change opens the door to innovation.

We’ve embraced technology, partnered with researchers and universities, and explored more sustainable ways to farm. Not because it’s popular, but because it’s necessary if we want this industry to survive and make a meaningful contribution to the future.

Leadership is About Presence

The longer I work in this industry, the more I realize: leadership isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about showing up. Listening, and truly understanding what’s happening on the ground.

I learn a lot from our people those who work hard every day to maintain the quality of our products for years. For them, this isn’t just about following SOPs or ticking off checklists. Their work comes from the heart. And it’s that passion that guides me as a leader.

I believe that if we stay true to our values, keep learning, and remain open to new perspectives, we’ll be ready to face whatever comes, together.

The lake has taught me that every decision creates a ripple. Just like the smallest movement on the water, our choices reach far beyond what we can see. That’s why at Regal Springs Indonesia, we strive to move forward in step with nature.
